Deadline is reporting that KJ Apa and Isabel May have been cast as the leads for the film adaptation of DC Comics characters The Wonder Twins at HBO Max.

Making their debut in 1977 comic Super Friends from E. Nelson Bridwell and artist Ramona Fradon, the Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna, are from the planet Exxor and are being informally trained by the DC superheroes. Their origins are further detailed in that the twins were orphaned during a plague and adapted by the alien Exorians. When they learn that villain Grax is set to destroy Earth, they travel there to warn the Justice League. They ultimately blend into life on Earth as Swedish exchange students, attending Gotham City High School.

KJ Apa (whose credits include Riverdale and Songbird) will be playing the role of Zan, who is a shapeshifter of sorts, and Isabel May (whose credits include 1883 and I Want You Back) will be playing the role of Jayna, who has the ability to transform into an animal.

The characters have appeared in other media, such as television shows Teen Titans Go! and Smallville. The film is written and will be directed by Adam Szytkiel, making his directorial debut, while Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey’s Temple Hill will be producing.

The Wonder Twins will commence production this summer in Atlanta.
