The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Lady Gaga is in early negotiations with Warner Bros. to star in Tod Phillips’ Joker sequel, currently titled Joker: Folie à deux.
Last week, Phillips revealed on social media the script for the sequel, which he and co-writer Scott Silver has been working on for some time, as well as its title – Joker: Folie à deux – and another image where Joaquin Phoenix was sitting down reading the script. While Phoenix hasn’t officially resigned to reprise the role of Arthur Fleck/Joker yet, sources tell THR that the two sides, Phoenix and Warner Bros., are deep into negotiations to seal a deal. Which comes to no surprise really, as the 2019 original film was a HUGE box office hit for the studio, considering its modest budget of $55m, it ended up earning over $1bn worldwide.
The title for the sequel is meant to be referencing a medical term for an identical or similar mental disorder that affects two or more individuals, usually members of the same family. The report states that if Lady Gaga does agree to star, it is likely that she will be playing the role of Harley Quinn in the sequel. Harley Quinn is well known on the big screen through Margot Robbie’s portrayal, though it’ll be interesting to get a deep dive into her work as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who ends up being corrupted by the Joker, falling in love with him and in-turn becoming his partner in crime.
Another line in the report from THR that stood out is that sources tell them that the sequel is going to be a musical. The 2019 film was not only a box office hit, but it was also an awards success, being nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning 2 for Best Actor and Best Original Score.
