Variety is exclusively reporting that Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane have signed on to be co-showrunners for the ‘It’ prequel series currently in development at HBO Max, titled ‘Welcome To Derry’.
.
The series is believed to be set to begin in the 1960s and then lead up to the events of 2017’s It, and it is also said to include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.
.
An ‘It’ prequel series was announced back in March of this year, with HBO Max given it a series production commitment. Jason Fuchs, who had been attached since the beginning of development, as he’s been developing the story alongside Andy Muschetti, director of It and It: Chapter Two, and producer Barbara Muschetti, and will be writing the script for the series. If the series gets greenlit, Andy Muschetti will at least direct the pilot.
.
Brad Caleb Kane’s recent television writing credits include Moonhaven and Tokyo Vice, as well as other series such as Warrior and Black Sails.
.
The two It films, released in 2017 and 2019, have a combined gross of $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, so news of Warner Bros. trying to return to that franchise makes sense, though I’m not sure how exploring the origin of Pennywise would work in execution, but we’ve seen in that one scene in the 2017 film that there’s definitely a lot of history that they can work into a potential series.
