Deadline is exclusively reporting that Disney look set to go back to the grid as Joachim Rønning is in early negotiations with the studio to direct the third installment Tron: Ares starring Jared Leto.
.
Tron first came out in 1982 starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, set in a world within a computer program, a cyberspace called the Grid. While not a major box office hit at the time, it was influential with it’s special effects and drew a cult following after its cinematic release. A sequel eventually followed in 2010 with Tron: Legacy starring Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges, making $400m worldwide at the box office.
.
Jared Leto has been attached to a Tron sequel since early 2017, and there were reports back in 2020 that the project looked to be back in development with Garth Davis in talks to direct. Now the project is back in track and the studio aims for a production start date in August in Vancouver.
.
If he signs the deal, this will mark Rønning’s fourth collaboration with Disney, having directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the upcoming Young Woman and the Sea.
.
The report states that the film is considered to serve as a sequel to Tron: Legacy, with the script written by Jesse Wigutow. Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman serve as executive producers on the project, whilst Jared Leto serves as producer alongside Justin Springer, Emma Ludbrook and Jeffrey Silver.
