Deadline is exclusively reporting that Duy Nguyen, Kayli Tran and VyVy Nguyen are the latest names to join the cast for the upcoming A24/HBO series The Sympathizer, with Marc Munden and Fernando Meirelles also attached to direct episodes of the drama series.
The Sympathizer, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States.
Duy Nguyen (whose credits include The Elevator and La nuit où Laurier Gaudreault s’est réveillé) will play the role of Man, the Captain’s blood brother and spy handler. His magnetism and intellect draw the Captain into working for the Communist cause. Kayli Tran (whose credits include Ambulance and Dead of Night) will be playing the role of The Communist Spy, a determined woman who’s willing to put everything on the line for the cause, but when she finds herself in enemy hands, her commitment is tested. VyVy Nguyen (whose credits include Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Dogs In Space) will be playing the role of The Major’s Wife, a seemingly sweet woman whose fierce devotion to her husband and country leads to dire ramifications.
The new additions will star alongside Robert Downey Jr., who is set to play multiple supporting roles as the main antagonists, all of whom represent a different arm of the American establishment. Also cast in the project are Sandra Oh, Kieu Chinh, Ky Duyen, Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le and Alan Trong.
Marc Munden (whose directing credits include Utopia and Help) will direct episodes 5, 6, and 7, while Fernando Meirelles (whose directing credits include City of God and The Two Popes) will direct episode 4. Don McKellar will also direct the series, as well as serve as co-showrunner with Park Chan-wook. Chan-wook and McKellar will serve as executive producers alongside Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell (Team Downey), Niv Fichman (Rhombus Media), Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Jisun Back (Moho Film).
The series is currently in production, with filming in Los Angeles and Thailand, and is a co-production between A24, HBO and Rhombus Media in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film.
