The official synopsis for the series is as follows:
1923, the next installment of the Dutton family origin story, will introduce a new generation of Duttons led by patriarch Jacob and matriarch Cara. The series will explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.

The prequel series has been a major hit for the streaming service, becoming the most watched premiere ever on Paramount+ in the U.S, drawing in 7.4m total viewers across Paramount+ and linear previews. The series is created by Taylor Sheridan, who executive produces alongside David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari and Ben Richardson.
