The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that the comedy-drama series A League Of Their Own has been renewed for a second and final season at Prime Video.

The official synopsis for the series is as follows:

A League Of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.

The report states that the renewal comes months after negotiations between the streamer, creators/showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, and producers Sony Television Pictures. THR’s sources indicate that the showrunners pushed hard for the series to get renewed, whilst Sony Pictures Television, who own the rights to A League Of Their Own is an adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name, negotiated a reduced licensing fee as Amazon set out to cut the show’s overall price tag and budget for a second season.

Unfortunately this means that the upcoming season and final season will be a lot shorter than fans of the show would’ve hoped for, only getting four episodes (half of the first seasons number of episodes) to conclude its story. THR’s sources state that a wrap-up film was even considered for the series, and that the cast had to sign new deals due to the second/final season being a shorter run than the first.

Admittedly I’m surprised by the announcement of a shortened-season, as well as the renewal being only for a final season, as the series has received strong acclaim amongst critics and those that watched it. Whether it didn’t receive the word-of-mouth kind of gains that Amazon were hoping for I’m not too sure, as I don’t believe Prime Video release any viewership data, or if it’s one of the unfortunate reasons being that Amazon are spending big on obtaining well known IP and this is the consequence of that?
