Variety is exclusively reporting that Jon Spaihts has been bought on board at Netflix to write the script for the live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise Gears of War.
.
Gears of War is set on the fictional planet of Sera, where in the video game series we follow a squad of commandos living in a bombed out post-apocalyptic society who battle swarms of creatures called Locusts.
.
Jon Spaihts released a statement saying:
‘Gears of War’ is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.
.
Jon Spaihts credits include Doctor Strange, Dune and the upcoming Dune: Part Two.
.
The Coalition, the company behind the video game franchise, released a statement saying:
We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring ‘Gears of War’ to life. Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves ‘Gears of War.’ We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honour our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.
.
A Gears of War film adaptation has been attempted previously at Universal pictures during 2016 to 2019, with various writers attached to the project but never blossomed. In late 2022, Netflix acquired the film and television rights for the property, in partnership with The Coalition, first doing this project which will then be followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for further stories to follow.
