Variety is exclusively reporting that Lupita Nyong’o and Chloë Grace Moretz are set to star in the mixed martial arts drama film Strawweight.

The film will follow the journey of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One is a young woman whose life is changed forever when she discovers her passion for the UFC, while the other is a former champion who is determined to reclaim her title by reinventing herself. Both want the same thing – respect – but only one can come out on top.

Chloë Grace Moretz (whose recent credits include Nimona and The Peripheral) will play the young fighter, while Lupita Nyong’o (whose recent credits include A Quiet Place: Day One and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) will play the role of the former champion.

The film will mark the directorial feature debut of James M. Johnston, whose produced numerous films including The Green Knight, The Old Man and the Gun, and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. The film is written by Paul Harrill, with Lars Knudsen (Square Peg) serving as producer on the project alongside David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks (Sailor Bear), and Patrick Newall. UFC fighter and former Strawweight champion Rose Namajunas serves as not only a fight consultant on the project, but will also executive produce the film.

The film is being launched at the European Film Market (EFM) by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance, who will also co-represent worldwide sales.
