Lubo: Shadow Distribution Acquires North American Rights For Drama

Variety is exclusively reporting that U.S. distributor, Shadow Distribution, have acquired the North American rights for the Fran Rogowski-led drama Lubo.

The official synopsis for the film is as follows:

Lubo makes a humble living as a street performer when, in 1939, he is called to join the Swiss army to defend the border from a potential German invasion. Forced to abandon his family, he soon discovers that his wife tragically died while trying to stop the authorities from taking their three children away.

Targeted because they are Jenisch, a minority nomadic community, Lubo’s family falls victim to a national campaign for the ‘re-education’ of street children. But Lubo knows he will not find peace until he reunites with his children and gets justice for himself and his people – for which he is ready to go to extraordinary lengths.

So begins a decades long journey for love and self-determination, an incredible adventure and an epic quest for freedom.

Ken Eisen, President of Shadow Distribution, released a statement saying:

It is an honour and a pleasure to take on this magnificent film for North America. We were struck by Lubo’s depth and ambition and, of course, transfixed by the central performance of Franz Rogowski.

Shadow Distribution acquired the rights from Italy’s True Colours. The film is a co-production between Italy’s Indiana Production, Arancia Film, RAI Cinema and Swiss company Hugo Films. The film is written by Giorgio Diritti and Fredo Valla, and directed by Diritti who also serves as producer alongside Fabrizio Donvito, Benedetto Habib, Marco Cohen, Daniel Campos Pavoncelli, Francesca Scorzoni and Christof Neracher.

Franz Rogowski stars alongside Christophe Sermet, Valentina Bellé, Noémi Besedes, Joel Basman, Cecilia Steiner and Filippo Giulini.
