A24 have taken to social media to release the first-look image for The Smashing Machine, the drama biopic about former mixed martial artist and UFC champion Mark Kerr, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

The film, which will focus on the former wrestler and mixed martial artist, will look into his struggle with addiction, winning, love and friendship in the year 2000. Mark Kerr earned the nickname ‘The Smashing Machine’ during his career, where he would finish as a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, a World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner, a Pride FC Heavyweight Champion, 1992 NCAA National Wrestling Champion, 1994 National Freestyle Champion and a four-time ADCC World Submission Champion.

Dwayne Johnson will portray Mark Kerr, while Emily Blunt will be playing the role of Dawn Staples, Mark Kerr’s wife.

Benny Safdie will be making his solo directorial debut with this project at A24. Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions acquired the rights in 2019 to development The Smashing Machine, and has been collaborating with Benny Safdie since the acquisition as Benny has also been writing the script. The duo will also serve as producers under their respective banners (Safdie’s Out for the Count) alongside Dany Garcia, Eli Bush and David Koplan.
