Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International have announced today that Universal will serve as the international distributor for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael.

Michael is set to be an in-depth portrayal of a complicated man who become the King of Pop. It will bring to life Jackson’s most iconic performances as it gives an informed insight into the entertainer’s artistic process and personal life.

Universal will handle all territories with the exception of Japan, with Lionsgate handling the film on the domestic front.

Joe Drake, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair, released a statement saying:

Michael’s decades-long career left an indelible mark on the way audiences experience entertainment all over the world. We are thrilled to be partnering with our friends at Universal to give global audiences new insight into the complex life of one of the most prolific artists the world has ever known.

Lionsgate acquired worldwide rights to make a Michael Jackson biopic in early 2022, with producer Graham King and writer John Logan attached to the project. Currently Antoine Fuqua is attached direct the film, with Jaafar Jackson, son of Jermaine Jackson and Michael’s nephew, brought on board to play the role of Michael. GK Films will be producing the project alongside the co-executors of Jackson’s estate, John Branca and John McClain.

It is believed that production on Michael will commence once the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved.
