Deadline is exclusively reporting that Neon have acquired the U.S. distribution rights for the film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story The Monkey.

The film focuses on twin brothers Hal and Bill. When they discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.

The Monkey is one of many short stories that can be found in Stephen King’s Skeleton Crew book. the report states that multiple U.S. distributors were in competition for the project, though they hear that Neon struck a deal in the high seven figures.

The film is written and directed by Oz Perkins, with James Wan serving as producer alongside Atomic Monster partner Michael Clear, C2 Motion Picture Group’s Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan, Range’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Odd Fellows’ Chris Ferguson. Range’s Fred Berger will serve as executive producer alongside Star Collective’s Peter Lou and Nancy Xu, and Black Bear’s John Friedberg.

The Monkey stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell and Sarah Levy.
