Variety is exclusively reporting that Kathryn Newton is in talks to play the female lead in Legendary’s live-action Pokemon film Detective Pikachu.

Based on the video game of the same name, the premise focuses on Pikachu encountering a boy named Tim Goodman who is able to understand what he is saying and the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.

Kathryn Newton (whose credits include Supernatural, Halt and Catch Fire and Big Little Lies) has apparently beaten the likes of Natalia Dyer, Haley Lu Richardson and Katherine Langford for the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If she signs for the role, Newton will be playing Lucy, a sassy journalist who goes on an adventure with the boy and Pikachu. Newton will be joining Justice Smith for the film.

Back in July of last year, it was reported that Legendary acquired the rights from The Pokémon Company to develop a live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Since first being introduced to Japanese audiences in 1996, the franchise has sold 295m copies worldwide and has had an animated series spanning twenty seasons. Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan, while Toho, The Pokémon Company’s longtime collaborator, will handle distribution in Japan. Rob Letterman is attached to direct the project, whilst the script was written by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch.

There’s no official cinematic release date as of yet for Detective Pikachu.
